Pre-Race RC Car Inspection Checklist
This can also be used as a pre-drive checklist. Either way, it can help stimulate some thought on potential trouble areas. Have a peek at these 24 core inspection points.
Battery and Electronics (Both Nitro and Electric)
1. Battery Inspection
• Check for any damage or swelling.
• Ensure batteries are fully charged.
• Bring spare, fully charged batteries.
• Verify charge level of receiver batteries.
2. Electronic Connections
• Secure all connections (receiver, ESC, motor).
• Inspect wires for fraying or damage.
• Verify the receiver antenna is positioned correctly.
• Ensure wire connections are still mounted.
• Ensure the sensor wire is still connected.
3. Transponder and Receiver Check
• Ensure the transponder is securely installed and functioning.
• Verify the transponder is registered with the race timing system.
• Make sure ESC, transponder, and receiver are secure.
4. Transmitter Check
• Check battery level of the transmitter.
Tires and Wheels
5. Tire Condition
• Inspect tires for wear and replace if necessary.
• Ensure tires are properly glued to the rims.
6. Tire Selection
• Choose appropriate tires for the track conditions.
7. Wheel Alignment
• Verify and adjust wheel alignment (toe-in/toe-out) as needed.
• Pre-race: Check toe and camber.
Suspension and Steering
8. Suspension Setup
• Check shock absorbers for leaks and refill if needed.
• Adjust ride height, damping, and spring rates.
• Pre-race: Check ride height.
9. Steering Components
• Inspect steering linkage, servo, and servo horn.
• Ensure all parts are aligned and tightened.
Transmission and Gears
10. Gear Inspection
• Check for wear or damage.
• Clean and lubricate gears.
11. Mesh Adjustment
• Adjust the gear mesh to prevent stripping or binding.
• Check gear mesh and for any damage on the spur.
Chassis and Body
12. Chassis Inspection
• Inspect the chassis for cracks or damage.
• Tighten all screws and fasteners.
13. Body Shell
• Clean and inspect the body shell for cracks.
• Securely attach the body to the chassis.
Drive Train
14. Motor and Gears
• Ensure motor is secure.
• Check gear mesh and for any damage on the spur.
• With wheels off, move the wheel hexes in and out to check for broken bearings.
• With wheels on, make sure the nut is tight.
Nitro-Specific Maintenance
15. Brake and Fuel System
• Verify brake linkages, failsafes, and vehicle brakes themselves function properly.
• Verify fuel system is in working order, internally clean, and free of leaks.
16. Exhaust and Air Filter
• Verify the condition of the exhaust system.
• Service the air filter every 5 tanks of runtime.
17. Glow Plug and Ignition
• Verify the glow plug and glow ignitor condition.
• Verify the charge level of glow ignitors.
• Verify the pull start is operating properly.
Final Checks (Both Nitro and Electric)
18. Practice Runs
• Conduct practice runs on a similar track.
• Make final adjustments based on performance.
19. Toolkit and Spares
• Bring a toolkit (screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers).
• Pack spare parts (tires, gears, suspension components).
20. Race Day Essentials
• Ensure you have a pit box or hauler for your gear.
• Pack a charger for batteries and other necessary equipment.
Personal Preparation

Pre-Race and Between Races (Both Nitro and Electric)

• Perform a spin test to ensure smooth operation and that wheels turn in the opposite direction.

• Ensure smooth operation by squishing the suspension.
• Check for damage in the shock tower, A arms, and steering arms.
• Verify that ball cups are still secure.
